It has been an adventurous and joyful summer here at the Special Collections. Sadly, this Wednesday was our last Family Fun for the summer. We have had great fun and seen lots of impressive art work during the past five weeks. Here’s what we did on our last two Family Funs.
Up to the Arctic
Last week we went up to the Arctic, following the footsteps of David Cardno, who sailed to the Arctic when he was only 13 years old. You can find more about David’s fascinating story in the Wanderlust exhibition in the gallery.
David Cardno was intrigued by the Inuit people he met in the Arctic and studied their customs, language and culture. Inspired by some of his stories and drawings, we made Inuit conjuring masks and animal prints.
In to the Rainforest
This week was all about the amazing Amazon and the wildlife in the rainforest. One of our Wanderlust travellers, James Trail, was a botanist at Aberdeen University who travelled to the Amazon rainforest to collect exotic plants. We learned about the different layers in the rainforest: the forest floor, understory, the canopy and emergent layer. Participants chose their favourites and made a double layer rainforest scene.
Wednesday’s favourite, by far, was the green paper lizard. Many had time to make colourful birds with tissue paper feathers as well. By the end of the session, we had toucans and parrots flying around and sneaky lizards trying to catch a bite!
