The Good, The Bad and the Ugly… Book Week Scotland Family Fun 2013

Literary characters come in all shapes and sizes and we have been celebrating the Good, Bad and Ugly characters that make children’s books so enjoyable. Whether you cheer on the heroes and lovable characters like Peter Pan, Winnie the Pooh or Tin Tin, or you love to hate the baddies like Miss Trunchbull, the Twits or the Queen of Hearts, we all have our favourite characters. For this year’s Book Week Scotland Family Fun participants were invited to come along to The Sir Duncan Rice Library dressed as those characters. We chose Katniss Everdeen (The Hunger Games) and Katie Morag and we were joined by the Gruffalo, George (Peppa Pig’s brother), Scooby Doo, Thomas the Tank Engine and many more.

Inspired by images from our collection as well as their own books participants made paper bag puppets of book characters. Sarah made Mary Poppins, who I think we can all agree is a good character (practically perfect), while I made Captain Hook, who could be considered to be both Bad and Ugly.

Our participants also helped the Library decorate its Christmas tree by making little book decorations. Some were decorated with snowflakes and trees on the outside while others wrote stories and drew pictures to fill the pages inside.

Phillipa and Sasha from the Scottish Book Trust came all the way from Edinburgh to see us and join in the fun. Thanks to them and all of our participants for lending us some Christmas spirit!

Family Fun will be back in the New Year so keep an eye on the blog for news.
