17th January 2019 – Newcastle University Learning & Education Team Visit
Susan Curran, Learning, Outreach and Student Engagement Curator for Museums and Special Collections welcomed staff from Newcastle University Special Collections for a tour of our facilities: Gillian Johnston and Sara Bird, Education Outreach Officers and Kim Gaiger, Senior Archives Assistant. Kim works part time with the Education Outreach Team and manages the exhibition programme. They were very impressed with the Reading Room, learning facilities and exhibition areas in The Sir Duncan Rice Library and were able to meet many of the staff and share ideas.
10th February 2019 – Display of Papal Bull
As part of the Founders Day celebrations, there was a rare opportunity to view the historic Papal Bull (KINGS/1/1/1/1/1). Andrew MacGregor and Neil Curtis were available to answer questions about the document which was displayed in the James MacKay Hall in the King’s College Conference Centre.
The annual Founders’ Day celebration pays tribute to the historic origins of the University which this year was conducted by Rev Marylee Anderson and Rev David Hutchison, Chaplains to the University, with a message of goodwill from distinguished guest preacher, Right Rev Susan Brown – Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland.
13th February 2019 – Friends of Duff House visit
On the 13th February a group of volunteers from the Friends of Duff House came to the Special Collections Centre to receive training in the handling of rare books and archive materials. Following a short presentation Brannah Mackenzie, Book Conservator, took the group through a series of practical activities pertaining to the handling of a variety of materials; including books, maps and plans, photographs and parchment.
